There once lived a demon king named Hiranyakashipu who was so powerful, he believed he was a god. He had a special magical blessing that meant he couldn't be harmed by man or beast, not during the day or the night, not inside a building or outside of one. He was filled with pride and demanded that everyone in his kingdom worship only him.

But there was one person who refused: his own son, Prahlada.

Prahlada was a kind and gentle boy, and his heart was full of devotion for Vishnu, the protector of the universe. This drove his father mad with fury.

"I am your king and your father! You will worship me!" he would roar.

Prahlada would simply reply, "Father, Vishnu is in all things and protects all people. My heart belongs only to him."

Hiranyakashipu tried everything to break his son's faith. He threw him from a cliff, but Vishnu saved him. He had him trampled by elephants, but Vishnu protected him. He even put him in a fire, but still, Prahlada sat calmly, chanting Vishnu's name, completely unharmed.

Finally, in a rage, the king pointed to a pillar in his palace. "You say your Vishnu is everywhere?" he sneered. "Is he in this pillar?"

"Yes, Father," Prahlada answered softly. "He is everywhere."

With a final roar, Hiranyakashipu smashed the pillar with his mace. And from the shattered stone emerged something incredible: Narasimha, an avatar of Vishnu who was half-man and half-lion. It was twilight (neither day nor night), and he stood on the palace doorstep (neither inside nor out). Narasimha picked up the king, placed him on his lap (neither on the ground nor in the air), and ended the tyrant's rule, all without breaking the magic blessing.
