Have you ever chanted the famous Sanskrit verse with your children?

"Guru Brahma, Guru Vishnu, Guru Devo Maheshwara,

Guru Sakshat Para Brahma, Tasmai Shri Gurave Namaha."

We often teach our children to recite this mantra, but do they know what the word "Guru" really means?

In Sanskrit, "Gu" means darkness or ignorance, and "Ru" means the light that removes it  . A Guru is anyone who guides us out of confusion, shows us the right path, and fills our hearts with wisdom, kindness, and skill  .

On the full moon day of the month of Ashadha, millions of families celebrate Guru Purnima  . It is a day dedicated to saying a heartfelt "Thank You" to the mentors, teachers, spiritual guides, and parents who illuminate our lives   .

Here are 3 beautiful stories from our scriptures to share with your children this July, along with a sweet family activity to celebrate Guru Purnima at home !

1. Maharishi Ved Vyasa: The Ultimate Master Teacher

Did you know that Guru Purnima is also celebrated as Vyasa Purnima  ?

Long ago lived Maharishi Ved Vyasa—the great sage who organized the vast wisdom of the Vedas, wrote the 18 Mahapuranas, and composed the epic story of the Mahabharata . He worked tirelessly so that future generations of children and families could easily understand goodness, duty (Dharma), and devotion .

  • Lesson for Kids: "Maharishi Vyasa shows us that true teachers share their knowledge generously so that everyone can learn and grow."

2. Krishna & Sudama at Sandipani Muni’s Gurukul

Long before Lord Krishna became a king, he lived as a simple student in the forest ashram (Gurukul) of his teacher, Sandipani Muni.

Even though Krishna was divine, he collected firewood, cleaned the Gurukul grounds, cooked meals, and studied alongside his friend Sudama with total humility and devotion. He showed us that no matter how smart or powerful someone is, they must always approach learning with a humble heart.

  • Lesson for Kids: "Learning requires humility. When we listen carefully to our teachers and respect our classrooms, knowledge flows into our minds effortlessly."

3. Parents: Your Very First Gurus (Matru-Pitru Guru)

In Sanatana Dharma, a child's very first Gurus are their Mother and Father. Long before a child steps into a school classroom, parents teach them how to walk, talk, speak kindly, share toys, and pray.

  • Lesson for Kids: "Your home is your very first Gurukul! When you listen to your parents and grandparents, you are honoring your first teachers."

3 Sweet Ways Kids Can Celebrate Guru Purnima at Home

Here are three simple rituals to help children practice gratitude on Guru Purnima  :

  1. The "Guru Pranam" Morning Gesture: Teach your child to touch the feet (Charan Sparsh) or bow gently to their parents and grandparents in the morning, asking for their warm blessings (Ashirvad).
  2. Handmade "Thank You" Cards for School Teachers: Encourage your child to make a handwritten card for their school teacher, sports coach, or music tutor saying: "Thank you for helping my mind shine!"
  3. Chanting the Guru Mantra Together: Sit together in your prayer space, light a small diya, and chant "Guru Brahma Guru Vishnu" 11 times together as a family .

Bedtime Conversation Starters

End your evening with these sweet questions:

  • "Who is a teacher or mentor in your life who always makes you feel encouragement and joy?"
  • "What is one new thing you learned this month that made you feel proud?"
  • "What do you think is the difference between knowing a lot of facts and having wisdom in your heart?"
